Backhoe loaders have been present in the construction industry for over 60 years, but when did they become one of the most recognised, and utilised types of machinery for businesses? This week we take a look at the history of the backhoe loader, and the most iconic invention of them all, the JCB 3CX.
WHEN WAS THE BACKHOE LOADER INVENTED?
The backhoe loader was first invented back in 1947 by Holopainen and Roy E. Handy Jr. The modern day backhoe loader originated from the idea of a tractor with a hydraulic backhoe. It was coincidental that the backhoe loader was born, after fitting hydraulic digging equipment to the rear of a tractor.
When the backhoe went on sale in 1948 in America, the company sold 24 units. Between 1948 and 1954, 7000 backhoes were made and sold. Meanwhile, in the UK, JCB began the creation of the popular JCB that we all know and love today. The first hydraulic loader was launched in 1948.

WHAT IS A BACKHOE LOADER, AND WHY IT IS USED?
A backhoe loader is a type of plant equipment that can be found on most construction sites. They are often compared to a tractor due to the typical shape and design of the machine. However, they are equipped with a front loader bucket and a backhoe attachment at the back.
Operators tend to enjoy using a backhoe loader due to the versatility of the machine. Not only have they got two buckets to use, they can also attach various hydraulic attachments to further better the machine productivity.
They are often used for the following tasks:
- Transporting materials
- Landscaping projects
- Small scale demolition work
If you want to increase productivity when on site, then the backhoe loader is the perfect option if you’re looking to buy used construction equipment for sale.
