October has seen the testing of electric trucks produced by Volvo for the construction industry. Test vehicles are being rolled out to Swerock, one of their customers in Sweden. The construction company is looking to meet the demand of vehicles that produce less emissions and are quieter on sites in urban areas. It would be great to see more electric plant equipment join the market!
Testing the new Volvo Construction Trucks
Volvo first established in Sweden in 1832. Since then it has gone from strength to strength from selling high quality cars to becoming a leading producer of plant equipment. The company is driven by sustainability. Developing a clean and sustainable future is a high priority for them.
After the introduction of serial produced electric trucks that were made for transport and refuse collection, another two electric trucks are currently being tested before they join the market.
Volvo FM electric truck
Firstly, the Volvo FM truck is equipped with a mixer, that will transport and deliver concrete to customers.
Volvo FMX electric truck
The new Volvo FMX truck has been designed with a hook lift and storage area to carry materials. This truck can be utilised in larger infrastructure projects.
The specifications of these electric trucks are yet to be released during the testing phase. However, in comparison to the current electric trucks by Volvo, the FE and FL, they have a mileage range of up to 124 and 186 miles. The batteries can also be fully charged from empty in 1 – 2 hours when DC charging is used. We can’t wait for the trucks to be revealed!
The testing has been designed to show the increase in productivity and reduce emissions. The main aim of testing is to improve sites in urban areas with regards to decreasing the noise levels of current plant equipment. With 15 current hybrid concrete mixers already on the market, it will be a big step for Volvo to roll out fully electric plant equipment.
It’s not just plant equipment that is going electric!
Not only can construction workers benefit from the new electric plant equipment, the market is also evolving for companies that need to deliver and transport goods to sites. Electric vans are becoming very popular with all types of companies.
Luckily our sister company, EVision Electric Vehicle Hire, has the brand new Vauxhall Vivaro-e vans available. With an increased demand in EVs, EVision can now offer van hire to all businesses, including the construction industry.
